Traditional Guitar Lessons Vs Online Guitar Lessons
The issue of choosing traditional guitar lessons (TGL) or online guitar lessons (OGL) has been discussed among guitar beginners for a very long time. I would say both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. You may want to consider different aspects and then decide which type of guitar lessons is more suitable for you. Anyway I will give you my recommendation at the end.
The first thing I would consider is the price. Learning guitar online is much cheaper than going to TGL. I have done a mini-research on that. Most TGL normally last 30 minutes for each. And you will probably have one lesson weekly. The cost is about US$40 per lesson. If you have four lessons a month, it will cost you about US$160 monthly.
The price of OGL can be ranged from US$30 to US$50 per programme. One OGL programme consists of learning material which is enough for you to learn a year. Surely quality of programmes may vary and you need to choose carefully. But put away the quality at this moment and do some mathematics. It is clear that OGL only costs you one to two of your TGL. Is it worth having a try?
Lower price is not the rule of thumb. TGL gain one more point for quality of learning material than OGL. But it is just a little bit better and it depends on which level of playing guitar you want to achieve.
In TGL you will have a real person teaching you how to play guitar. You will learn from the basic to the advanced level including theory, notes, scales and more (although it may take a long time). And it is easy for you to ask questions and get the answers. But the downside is that you only follow the fixed syllabus and cannot choose what to learn.
Learning material of OGL may not be as detailed as TGL’s. It is hard to become a worldwide famous guitarist through OGL but their material is really good enough for you to play great guitar music of songs for your family and friends. You can gain more fun from OGL.
Another advantage is that as most OGL’s material contains video lessons, you can play back and forth to learn until you totally understand a particular topic. You can also choose whatever topic to learn first and design the learning plan by yourself.
There are two more things to consider including convenience and self-motivation. It is no doubt that OGL offer you more convenience. You can learn from 8:00am to 10:00pm non-stop. You can learn at home, school, park or any places as long as there is a computer for you to watch the video lessons. You need not match your own schedule with your guitar teacher and take a long way to the lessons.
However OGL is not suitable for everyone. You must have a high level of self-motivation. It is because there is no one monitoring your learning progress. There is no fixed schedule to have lessons. Even though you do not practice, you will not be punished. Everything depends on your time management and desire to learn guitar.
These are the four aspects you need to consider now. They are price, quality of learning material, convenience and level of self-motivation.
I would suggest guitar beginners starting with OGL first. It is a good idea to invest a little money to test yourself whether you are really interested in learning guitar or you will just give up halfway. If you are serious about that, you can choose TGL later. The OGL will not be a waste. The knowledge you gain will be the fundamental of your guitar learning. It will only increase your learning speed in the future.
